Second Best

Oh God. I've found a job I actually want. A lot, on first sight. I'm even just about qualified -- for one version of it.

For reasons I don't properly understand, presumably to do with the way these things are funded, it seems to be an either/or vacancy for two quite distinct jobs, with quite distinct requirements and responsibilities, and one of these is (to put it mildly) way out of my league.

Here, for however long it remains up, is the advert.

I can only assume the subtext of all that is: we're looking for a brilliant particle physicist, but if we can't find one we'll make do with a programming flunky rather than see the money go unspent. Given that the streets of central London are (I'm projecting here) knee-deep in brilliant particle physicists, us programming flunkies probably don't stand much chance. And even if it comes to that, there are probably better programming flunkies on offer than this tired old games industry burnout. So I figure my chances must be somewhere between zero and nil.

The prospect of not getting a job I want is suddenly seeming a lot more daunting than the previous litany of not wanting the jobs I find, but fuck it. I'm going to apply anyway. Wish me luck.

And if you happen across any brilliant particle physicists in your travels, distract them somehow.

Speaking as a burnt out programming flunky myself, good luck with that.

I've started work herding all the particle physicists I can find into a pen at the bottom of my garden. Please tell me when I can let them go as the food will run out eventually, and I'd rather not have to borrow a JCB to bury the bodies.

I hope none of them read your blog :-)

Adam, use a wood-chipper on a really cold day; instant fertiliser pellets.

All the particlists [wohoo, neologism!] here are too attracted to their lab benches to even feed or wash themselves, so there's no risk from the Cambridge crew.

All the luck I can muster.

Thanks for the wood-chipper tip. I could probably sell any left over pellets to my neighbours.

Add my helping of luck.
