Let Down

Well, it happened. We were drenched by the rain, and burnt by the sun, and we danced in the streets, and it's over.

It went well, mostly, though we had to stop prematurely -- around about Downing Street, meaning we missed probably the last two repeats of the dances -- due to our generator running out of fuel. It took a bloody eternity to get out of Hyde Park, which I guess is where we burned up our margin, but we should have been okay if the tank had been full, which it wasn't. Tsk.

The dances were extremely well received, and the Green Park-Piccadilly Circus-Trafalgar Square stretch was, as always, a buzz. Even the downpour was fun, if a bit cold.

It went well, mostly; so why do I feel so miserable about it?

Perhaps it was the lack of a proper finish. Perhaps it's that in the past there would be some kind of social aftermath, whereas now it's just over, and we all go our separate ways. I guess it's always like this, to some extent; you just need something to mitigate the adrenalin come-down, and that something -- any something -- wasn't there this time.

Perhaps being let down by two of the people I love most in the world had something to do with it as well.

Perhaps I'm just getting too old for this nonsense.

Photos and such will follow in due course over on the Marching Boys pages, but I don't think I'll have anything more to say about it here.

Drunkenness beckons. Possibly some ill-advised wallowing in a tawdry cesspool of sex and drugs. Or possibly The Guardian's Araucaria crossword.

Oh, dear.

The being let down by two of the people you love most in the world is a particularly vicious move on the part of the universe.

Oh, dear.

The universe is a harsh mistress.

I must confess, though, that both letdowns were relatively minor. It was only post-performance fragility that led to my disproportionate upset. Since then I have recovered some sense of perspective.

On balance, the event was good. I had fun, I'm glad we did it, and I'm fucking well not getting too old for this nonsense!

Araucaria defeated me, however, which was annoying.

Cheer up Matt.

I was going to say that you are NOT getting too old and then I see your own comment beat me to it. So glad to see that!
