The Guide

He began to despise the universe in general, and everyone in it in particular.

For a minute I believed the BBC might actually have ported an Infocom Z-interpreter to Flash, which would have been an insane, but fantastically impressive, thing to do. (And I write as someone who has ported an adventure game virtual machine to Flash; it was indeed insane, though not, alas, fantastically impressive. Still faster than the Liberate port, though.) As it turns out, Flash is just the client for a server-side implementation of the classic game -- a disappointingly sensible design.

In any case, episode one of the new series is available to stream from the BBC website for the next 7 days. Perhaps it won't mean much if you weren't there for the earlier radio outings; perhaps it will just be another impenetrable comedy show. But it was a fucking nostalgia trip for me. Even posthumously, Douglas Adams is a genius.

So indulge my inner geek: go there at once (if you haven't already) and check it out.

The past week has been a trip into nostalgia. There's the new Hitchhiker's radio series and though I haven't been able to get into the Hitchhiker's Adventure Game, through a friend, I discovered the SCUMM Virtual Machine, allowing me to play some of my favorite old LucasArts games.

Good god. This was the text adventure I most wanted to play but never did. I clearly remember the cover of a computer magazine where I read the review, featuring Zaphod at a keyboard.
