Spirited Away
The intersection of bloggers and comics fans being what it is, you've probably heard by now that Will Eisner died the other day. As befits one of the genuine deities of the form, appreciations have come thick and fast; each one heartfelt, each one deserved. I haven't read enough of his work to count as a proper acolyte -- a couple of graphic novels, a couple of Spirit collections -- but enough to recognise his genius. In a year that, just a few days old, has already seen far more than its share of tragedy, this one bears noting.
Amongst all the encomia, Neil Gaiman's non-obituary deserves to be read.

I heard about Eisner's death on the radio this morning. I wasn't a particular fan of his work, being barely even aware of him in truth, but I'm always sad when someone who was a pioneering creator dies.
Curiously, the comment on the radio was that Eisner's most important contribution was not necessarily his comics, but the fact that he kept the rights to his characters.
