Turning Point

And so: the year begins its slow clamber down into winter. I cannot, at this moment, bring myself to be downhearted about that; surprising as that may seem, given the generally depressive demeanour that has been in evidence on these pages the last year or so. It surprises me, at any rate.

But the summer is barely begun. Like so many things, the best of it lags behind the official timetable. June is barely summer at all, and look what it has wrought already. This has been one of the most beautiful weeks I can, in my senescence, recall; how much more loveliness might there be still to come?

Five minutes from home and yet, officially, not in London at all; with feet not touching the ground.

So, let us wallow in the glories of the world, you and I. I promise to approach them with an open mind and an open heart if you will too -- whether you will or not, in fact. For one reason or another -- perhaps for no reason at all -- a turning point has been reached.

Say toodle-oo to sorrow
And fare-thee-well ennui...

And not a minute too soon.

matt:

it's so great you're on an upswing. i've read all about the dancing boys and wish i could join them one year. i used to dance with DRA (dancers responding to aids) in the new york pride parade, and in 94 i danced in the gay games opening and closing ceremonies. a highlight in my life.

i adore summer as well, hot and sweaty during the day and so balmy late at night. tons of free performances in new york's parks, too.

the ups and downs come in a fully lived life, and the only way through them is, well, through them. no sliding around the bad times, i've learned that.

and, if you don't write much, know that the photos are a lovely, much appreciated gift. especially those california golden poppies, that took me back.

I'm glad things are on the up.

One of the reasons for my semi-move to Spain was that the sun really does seem to make the world appear an altogether more pleasant place.

Here's hoping this is just the beginning of a long hot and happy summer.

[patrick] I wish you could join us one year too. You're cutting it fine -- I fear the whole enterprise may be running out of steam -- but if you make it over some future year and we're still going, you'll be more than welcome.

[Adam] Welcome back :)

Sunshine makes such a difference. That tiny variation in temperature and angle of incidence can transform the world.

It rained this afternoon, but fuck it, it's still hot and humid and lovely. The balcony doors are open, the fans a-twirl. It should always be this way.

Long, hot and happy. Happy happy happy. Upswings r us :)

"Did somebody say sunshine?" Ryan says from Southern California. "There's a bit of that around here. Come on over and enjoy it with me."

I love new beginnings like this. Shine on, cutey.

Glorious. So pleased.

I really wish I could join in, but the weather here in Portland has been miserable. We've had one of the wettest springs on record, and it still hasn't stopped raining. Summer this year looks set to be less cold rain.

I'm sure ryan will bask in this tale of Pacific Northwest misery, but then California got all of our rain over the winter so it basically evens out.

Keep riding that upswing, matt.
