Retirement

If all goes according to plan -- never, of course, guaranteed -- the step classes I taught on Monday and Tuesday evenings will be my last. Given that I wound up agreeing to both after I officially quit, things may not be quite that clear cut, but most likely they will. These were a special case: it was short notice, they were desperate, and actually I was pretty happy to have a couple of nice (and, on account of it being January, busy) finale sessions to round off my career as a fitness instructor.

It's not, really, that I stopped enjoying teaching, although it did sometimes seem I got more cover calls for classes I didn't like than for those I did. And it certainly wasn't, despite my occasional whinges in that direction, that I've gotten too old for it. But teaching exercise is something that you really need to do with a lot of commitment, and these days I just don't have the time or the inclination to do so. If I'm going to use up precious free time at the gym, it's probably better spent on my own decrepit frame.

A moment's silence, then, for that little sideline. It was, like so many things, fun while it lasted.

Stiff upper lip, Joel. One day all this will be yours.
