Ripper
This has probably been well-publicized, but I missed it, so I just thought I'd pass it along. Missy Elliott's latest CD This is not a test! uses non-Red-Book-compliant copy protection. (It has a discreet label to this effect, but I was in hurry and didn't notice). Most of it still rips OK, but tracks 5 and 12 crash iTunes. There may be some way to circumvent this, but it's certainly annoying and I wouldn't have bought it if I'd known -- pretty much the only way I listen to music these days is on my iPod, so a copy protected CD is not much more to me than a coaster.Let's ignore the vexed question of the ethics of music sharing and just assess this pragmatically. Will it do anything to stem piracy? Yeah, right. If Kazaa isn't knee deep in Is this our last time? MP3s I'll eat my hat. Will it help sales? Not to me. I've been a Missy fan for years, but I guess this is the last time I'll buy her records.
Nice work, Elektra.
Oh, and on first listen it's a pretty uninspiring album too.
